This new segment highlights some of the best new artists in the music today. I'm not sure how many artists I'll feature per installment. It'll probably change week by week depending how many artists I actually like. This week I have a bit of discopunk, dreampop, and psychwave. Enjoy.
Freak Heat Waves
Freak Heat Waves sounds like a cross between a circus and a disco. The deadpan vocals add another layer of apathy on top of a really catchy song. Reminiscent of Talking Heads and Gang of Four, "Dig a Hole" is a true toe-tapping foot-stomper full of interesting guitar work and a funky bass. It finishes off with a hazy and intense psychedelic dirge. A must listen!
Laser Background's album cover is a little bit risque yet tasteful. Their music is similar. "Looking Glass" teases you with filtered vocals, warm synthesizers, and a totally psychwave feel. Equally mellow and emotive, it truly feels like you've been transported to an alternate universe where you can fly. Give this a listen!
Minor Gems is a funky, disco-infused, beach pop band. I really dug their song, "In My Mind," which starts off with the lead vocals saying "Take me with you wherever you go." He croons over a mid-tempo dream pop riff and disco punk bass riff. The song transitions into a moodier interlude and back into the original verse.
